What to Buy as a Vacation Souvenir Gift? by Victoria Tiegert

When we go on vacation, there are often people left at home that we would like to pick up a little something for on our trip. It is a way of letting them know that they were on our minds and in our hearts, maybe even a way of saying that we wished they were there. You can run into a souvenir shop and grab a T-shirt off the rack, but in reality, how useful is that? They probably won't wear it more than once. If they do, they'll be getting the inevitable, "Oh, you went to "wherever", how was it?". Of course, they didn't go and have to explain that to each asker.

So, what is something that you can bring back to these people that they will truly appreciate and enjoy? The gift and souvenir shops at your destination will abound in great ideas and if you are in a tourist attraction place, you won't have to go far at all to find one. The hotel lobby may even have just what you need.

First, determine who you are going to be shopping for. Most of us don't want to spend a whole lot of our vacation time in the shops, so we should have a list prepared with a few notes of ideas jotted down by each name. This will go far in determining how long you spend meandering through the aisles. Also, come up with a general budget for each person. This will cut down on how much you spend, or overspend, leaving you struggling with the remainder of your vacation dollars.

What types of people are you buying for? Children, adults, males, females, hobbyists, etc. all have different styles and interests, so keep those in mind as you head out for your souvenir shopping. The following is a list of items that you may want to consider as they fit with the person you are buying for.

*Stemware/shot glasses-For the adult drinker, these are great little token gifts. Give some forethought, however to transporting them home. They will need to be well-wrapped and fit nicely into your bags or the shop may ship for a small fee.

*Stuffed animals-Children will appreciate having a soft plush and there are usually plenty to choose from.

*Coffee table books-These can get pricey but they are usually full of beautiful pictures and tell a bit about where you've been.

*Jewelry-Especially if you are in tropical locations, jewelry will abound. Shell necklaces and earrings are wonderful female gifts that will really get used.

*Journals and writing utensils-If there is a writer on your list, pick up a journal or a notebook and a pen with the vacation destination on the cover.

*Collection Items-Most people have something that they collect. Mine is bells, but some people collect spoons, thimbles, figurines, etc. If you have been in the person's house and paid attention, you've probably seen something that they seem to really like.

*Hats-Ball caps are popular among men and some women and children, as well.

*Decorative candles-These are perfect, but be careful with the scents as some people are highly allergic.

There are tons of things to choose from besides the old standby T-shirt. You can even go online and browse there. You may even be able to get all your shopping done that way and never have to enter the shops at all. This will save you time as well as money. The shops are tempting and once you're in the spirit of vacation, it seems that money just flows until before you know it, you're having to be careful that you don't run short to enjoy yourself. People love gifts and will appreciate that you thought of them no matter what you choose, but it's certainly nice when you find something that really says "them".
